Strategic Plan 2-07

SECTION ON RESEARCH STRATEGIC PLAN

FEBRUARY 2007

PREAMBLE

Given that research in physical therapy has evolved and advanced in recent years, the Section on Research (SOR) recognizes the need to respond to the challenges and responsibilities of facilitating and supporting research efforts of physical therapists in complex and dynamic health care environments. With these factors in mind, the leadership of the SOR decided to update its strategic plan. A formal strategic planning process included: (1) a re-examination of why the SOR exists (Mission); (2) what the SOR would like to achieve in the next 3-5 years (Vision), (3) how we make it happen (Goals), and (4) how we get there (Objectives and Strategies).[1] The aim was to support the mission, vision and goals with objectives and strategies that are feasible, measurable, and would specifically guide financial and member resource allocation over the next 3 to 5 years. The plan identified below was formulated to make important statements about the direction of the SOR, while also clearly identifying activities that require the commitment of the SOR and its members in collaboration with others to support the research-related needs of physical therapists.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Section on Research is to facilitate the best practice of physical therapy through enhancement of the quality, dissemination, and utilization of research.

VISION STATEMENT

The Section on Research, through education, collaboration, advocacy, and mentorship, will empower both clinicians and researchers to generate, disseminate, and translate physical therapy-related research that will guide best clinical practice.

GOALS

1.       Facilitate the generation of high-quality physical therapy related research that supports best practice and influences health policy.

2.       Improve the dissemination of physical therapy-related research.

3.       Facilitate translation of research findings for appropriate utilization in clinical practice.

GOALS WITH ASSOCIATED OBJECTIVES AND STRATEGIES

1.      Goal: Facilitate the generation of high-quality physical therapy-related research that supports best practice and influences health policy.

1.1.    Objective: Provide educational opportunities or information resources to support the generation of research each year.

1.1.1. Strategy: Each year at CSM or other national meetings, offer 2 educational sessions specifically focused on research methodology for researchers in clinical research/ academic settings.

1.1.2. Strategy: Provide 1 thematic program (such as the Clinical Education Series at the Annual Meeting) in the next 3 years that provides education around research-related issues.

1.1.3. Strategy: Provide 1 web-based resource identifying sources/links to possible funding mechanisms.

1.1.4. Strategy: Provide a forum for vendors to interface with the research community as a way of facilitating new areas of research at a national/regional meeting.

1.2.    Objective: Provide mechanisms that facilitate research collaboration each year.

1.2.1. Strategy: Collaborate with APTA’s Department of Research and the Foundation for Physical Therapy to set up and implement an interactive online database. The database, using self-identified information, will facilitate linkage between clinicians interested in participating in research and researchers looking for clinician collaborators or clinicians interested in participating in subject recruitment or data collection. The target would be to have a minimum of 100 individuals enter their information into the database by July 2008.

1.2.2. Strategy: Provide 1 networking opportunity each year for individuals involved in research generation to “establish” or initiate collaboration/support (e.g., research roundtables at national conferences).

1.3.    Objective: Explore mentoring models for research.

1.3.1. Strategy: Form a mentorship committee to identity needs, constraints, and possible solutions to improve mentorship opportunities within physical therapy-related research by September 2007.

2.      Goal: Improve the dissemination of physical therapy-related research.

2.1.    Objective: Provide educational programming on how to write abstracts and prepare poster/platform for presentations, along with how to format papers for publication, to increase likelihood of successful dissemination of research findings.

2.1.1. Strategy: Provide 2 educational programs at regional and national meetings each year in 2008, 2009, and 2010 [e.g., Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) model (regional courses), and other national meetings such as Prevue 2020 and Conference of OMT].

2.1.2. Strategy: Post presentations generated at regional and national meetings in a web-accessible format within 3 months of each initial presentation.

2.1.3. Strategy: Develop web-based interactive formats for presentation of formulated educational programs within 1 year of initial presentation

2.2.    Objective: Provide collaborative opportunities to facilitate dissemination of research.

2.2.1. Strategy: Offer 1 breakfast round tables session at each Combined Sections Meeting (’08-’10) on how to: (1) write abstracts for and prepare posters; (2) write abstracts for and prepare platform presentations; (3) prepare research papers for publication; and (4) prepare case reports for publication.

2.2.2. Strategy: Partner with and support other sections on offering thematic poster sessions at Combined Sections Meeting and the Scientific Meeting.

2.3.    Objective: Provide venues and mechanisms to communicate and exchange information on reported research.

2.3.1. Strategy: Establish a committee to develop and provide by February 2008 a compendium of web-based resources (with links where possible) including journals, non-scientific publications, and non-print alternatives that are vehicles for dissemination of research.

2.3.2. Strategy: Increase by 10% the utilization of the Posters-to-go program through continued and stronger marketing (presuming development of a measurement strategy for utilization).

2.3.3. Strategy: Work with APTA to bring a selected set of Posters-to-go posters to Student Conclave and conduct poster tours as part of programming in October 2007.

2.3.4. Strategy: Form a committee to identify a topic for, plan, and implement a Research Retreat within the next three years that will serve as a forum for presentation of and collaboration on research taking place on the chosen topic.

3.      Goal: Facilitate translation of research findings for appropriate utilization in clinical practice.

3.1.    Objective: Investigate the current state of translating research findings into clinical practice in practice settings.

3.1.1. Strategy: Form a committee to explore mechanisms for facilitating translation of research findings into clinical practice.

3.1.2. Strategy: Identify and explore a small group of practices (3) that are integrating research that guides best practice into their existing practice patterns.

3.1.3. Strategy: Present findings and recommendations of the committee charged with exploring translation of research into clinical practice.
