Review of our March 2012 Fly-In:

A group of 10 researchers from across the country jetted to Capitol Hill for two intense days of learning and lobbying this past March.  Our group was comprised of Section on Research members committed to insuring key congressional members understand and support NIH translational research funding through these lean economic times.  Each of us spent time educating our congressional representatives on the importance of the NIH funding levels to create jobs in his/her state and shared stories on the research going on using NIH funding right now.   We had support and direction from the APTA Government Affairs Staff and Lobbyists to make a strong impact.  Thank you to our volunteers and our APTA staff, who made the trip a success.  There were many who signed on to APTA sponsored legislation after our trip.
Pictured above are the SOR members at a breakfast with Congresswoman Roybal-Allard on Capitol Hill.
A warm thank you to our researchers from Alabama (Dave Brown), California (Nancy Byl, Sam Ward), Illinois (Julie Schwertfeger), Iowa (Laura Frey-Law), Louisiana (Sharon Dunn, Jane Eason), Montana (Ryan Mizner), Rhode Island (Pete Blanpied) and Texas (Steve Fisher).  Thank you also to APTA staff and lobbyists and the help of Esther Haskvitz, Sandra Davis.  Below is a summary of focal points discussed during our trip.
